Beyond the Buzz: How AI Becomes a True Business Partner.
In the swirling winds of innovation, few forces have sparked as much awe, anxiety, and anticipation as generative AI. Yet, amid the trillions of dollars invested and the clamor of disruption, a sobering truth rises—mass adoption of AI is not instant. It’s inevitable, but it’s also complex, uneven, and deeply human.
Generative AI, especially since the launch of ChatGPT, has captured the imagination of the world. Within just two months, ChatGPT reached 100 million monthly active users—a record-breaking feat. Compare that to Instagram’s two years or Facebook’s five, and you might expect an AI-augmented world to be already here. But while excitement is high, adoption—especially in enterprise settings—lags behind. So why the delay?

The challenge is not technology. It’s people, processes, and purpose.
AI isn't just a tool; it's a transformation. And transformation takes time. As Kiran Prasad, cofounder of Big Basin Labs, wisely points out, we are in the “early Google” days of AI. Just as users once needed help to type a search query, today’s workforce needs to learn how to prompt, guide, and collaborate with AI effectively. There’s a learning curve—not only for individuals but for institutions.
In the consumer space, AI is thriving. Startups are “AI first” by default, building logos, writing code, creating content, and even managing customer service—all with the help of generative tools. But in the enterprise world, friction abounds. Legal teams raise red flags. IT buyers demand business cases. Leaders hesitate over ROI. And perhaps most critically, many companies still lack the talent to implement and scale AI solutions effectively.
But the horizon is bright. As Navin Chaddha of Mayfield Fund notes, the evolution is underway. We're moving from using AI as a mere assistant to embracing it as a digital teammate. This “agentic” future envisions AI not just doing tasks, but proactively driving value—an AI that writes, reasons, and refines alongside you.
Still, AI must never be adopted for its own sake. As Naba Banerjee, former Airbnb director of trust and operations, reminds us, the goal is to solve real problems. When AI reduced party incidents at Airbnb by 55%, it wasn’t magic—it was mission-driven application, powered by cross-functional collaboration.
As we look toward 2028, the organizations that thrive will be those that see AI not as a replacement for people, but as an amplifier of human potential. Leadership will be defined not by who has the best technology, but by who can communicate clearly, act responsibly, and innovate boldly with digital teammates at their side.
The AI revolution is not about machines taking over. It’s about people rising higher.
Now is the time to prepare. Train your teams. Reimagine your workflows. Pilot new use cases. And most importantly—start. Because mass adoption may take time, but those who begin the journey today will lead the world tomorrow.
