How to lead the journey to a data ubiquity and AI-driven future enterprise
The Path to 2030: Building the Data & AI-Driven Enterprise (1)
In the quiet dawn of the next decade, a transformation stirs. We are waking to a new age—where data is no longer a byproduct, but the lifeblood of organizations; where AI is not a gadget, but the pulse through which strategic insight flows. As we inch toward 2030, the question is no longer if business will be driven by data and intelligence, but how intentionally and artfully leaders will chart that course.
This series, Charting the Path to 2030, is an invitation—to dream, to plan, and to act. Over the coming weeks, we will walk together across seven guiding priorities, each a signpost on the trail. But first, let me frame the landscape: what forces are shaping this frontier, and why the journey matters now.
The Tides That Will Carry Us

1. An Unstoppable Surge of Value
The economic stakes are enormous. AI is poised to contribute up to $15.7 trillion to global GDP by 2030. (PwC)
Organizations that master the disciplines of data and predictive intelligence will not merely improve their operations—they will rewrite their margins, their moats, their very destinies.
Hyperscale investments will back this up. McKinsey anticipates that data centers—particularly those built to support AI workloads—will command $5.2 trillion of the projected $6.7 trillion in capital expenditures through 2030. (McKinsey & Company) Behind every bold analytics algorithm lies a mountain of compute, storage, networking, and energy logistics.
2. The Era of “Everything, Everywhere, All at Once”
We are crossing into a world where data flows through every system, decision, and interaction. McKinsey calls this “Everything, Everywhere, All at Once”—where the digital and physical fuse, and where every move is recorded, contextualized, and available for insight.
The ability to see across silos, to stitch datasets across departments and domains, will no longer be an advantage—it will be survival.
3. The Looming Tension of Power, Energy, and Ethics
This future is not without cost or complexity. The appetite for computing bleeds into energy demand, real estate, cooling, and sustainability. (McKinsey & Company)
At the same time, generative AI and large models bring sharp focus to trust, governance, bias, and the risk landscape. One misstep in data stewardship or model fairness could erode reputation, invite regulatory wrath, or shake customer trust.
Why This Journey Can’t Wait
To delay is to drift. Companies that experiment in fits and starts—launching pilots that stall, or investing in infrastructure without a coherent roadmap—often find themselves trapped in “pilot purgatory.” Meanwhile, more audacious peers gain real momentum. Today’s decisions about architecture, governance, culture, and talent will define not just how far you go, but how gracefully you land.
Leaders must lean into three dimensions simultaneously:
Engineering & architecture: Build foundation systems, modular pipelines, and robust data infrastructure.
Governance & trust: Guard privacy, fairness, compliance, explainability.
Business value orientation: Tie every model to meaningful outcomes, not just novelty.
In this blog series, each leg of the journey will reveal how to bridge strategy and execution. We’ll explore:
How to escape the trap of isolated pilots and scale your AI programs
How to tap the vast potential of unstructured data
How to reimagine talent, leadership, and organizational models
How to treat ethical risk as a source of strength, not a burden
We will bring these ideas to life with real-world case studies—businesses that dared to architect their futures, that faced setbacks, and that still charted forward. And with practical takes for leaders—what to start, what to measure, what to guard.
A Promise to the Reader
I write this to you as one traveler among many, not as a distant sage. My promise is threefold:
Clarity — We will surface frameworks and guardrails that light the path.
Ambition grounded in reality — We will marry bold vision with practical constraints.
Invitation — You will be invited to pause, reflect, and apply—because the best road is the one you walk.
So, come with me. Let us begin in the next installment with the first priority: “Everything, Everywhere, All at Once”—how to impregnate your systems with awareness, and how to cultivate horizon vision in the fog of today’s complexity.
In the years ahead, the data- and AI-driven business will be not just advantaged, but essential. Our journey begins now.
